Surprise Procedure in Morning Surgery
Patient was a young, male football player with headaches. Noticed swelling at the base of skull and surgery was arranged to drain the pressure build-up in his brain. I observed this surgery. It was unique for me, because I actually met the patient before-hand, observed sedation and surgical prep, including instrument preparation, resulting in some great device sketches. The surgery was sketched live, and those actual sketches are included below.
Surgical illustration is an excellent example of an interface that most end users are familiar with, but so many illustrators fail at because simplicity is not their main goal. This is a more complex example of surgical illustration, with few words and requiring a mildly complex design due to dual surgical sites. Contextual elements allow the viewer, usually someone with medical training, to follow the process without arrows or words. I observed, sketched, illustrated, and designed this piece.
